Sermon Preached in January 1, 2026

NEWNESS BEGINS WHEN POWER ENTERS

(Power Entered Me)
By Rev. Dr. Festus Olu Ade Alade, ZBC, Ilorin Church Pastor
Anchor Text: Acts 1:4–8 (NKJV)
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”

Introduction

Church, lift your voice and shout: THANK YOU JESUS! We crossed over! We made it! Not everyone made it — but we are here, preserved by mercy and sustained by grace.

Some people entered this year in hospitals. Some entered in tears. Some entered with questions. But God allowed us to enter in worship.

Song: “I will enter His gate with thanksgiving in my heart…”
Sing: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceased.”

And hear me carefully this morning: we did not just cross into a new date — we have stepped into a new spiritual season.

Tell your neighbor with conviction: “This year must be different.” Not different because the calendar changed, but different because God is about to change you and me.

See This Foundation Truth

Beloved, let me be clear from the beginning: a new year does not automatically produce a new life. A new calendar does not guarantee a new heart, and a new season does not mean a new story.

Many people celebrate January 1 with Christ, humble themselves, and promise a change of life, but by February 1 they are back in the same bondage. Why? Because only the Holy Spirit makes all things new.

That is why Jesus said in Acts 1:8, “You shall receive power…” Jesus did not say you shall receive motivation, education, or inspiration. He said you shall receive POWER.

Because without power, information expires. Without power, discipline collapses. Without power, old habits resurrect.

Point 1: Newness Does Not Begin With Time — It Begins With Spiritual Power

Many people entered 2026 the same way they entered 2025 — with good intentions and empty spirits. They said, “This year I’ll try harder,” “This year I’ll do better,” “This year I’ll change.” It is New Year, new resolution.

But intention without power is frustration waiting to happen. Jesus did not tell the disciples, “Set goals.” He did not say, “Create a strategy.” He said, “Wait… until power comes.”

Jesus understood something crucial: time changes nothing without transformation. The Israelites left Egypt in one night, but stayed in Egypt for forty years because power had not yet worked inside them.

Church, hear this word clearly: if power does not enter you, old patterns will follow you into the new year. That’s why some people change location but not condition, change environment but not appetite.

Shout this with faith: “I refuse to repeat old cycles!”

Point 2: Power Is Received, Not Achieved

Jesus said, “You shall RECEIVE power…” This is where religion breaks down and grace takes over. Power is not earned. Power is not learned. Power is not inherited. Power is received.

That means you don’t fix yourself first, you don’t clean yourself up first, and you don’t conquer sin before coming to God. You come as you are — and the Holy Spirit does what you could never do.

Think of David. He did not defeat Goliath because he trained harder; he defeated Goliath because the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. Think of Peter. He denied Jesus before power came, but after power entered, the same Peter preached and three thousand souls were saved.

This is good news for somebody who entered this year tired, ashamed, or weak.

Lift your hands and say: “Lord, I receive!”

Point 3: When Power Enters, Identity Changes

Before Acts 1:8, the disciples were afraid, locked themselves in rooms, and ran from persecution. After power entered, they stood in public, preached without apology, and rejoiced in suffering.

Beloved, power does not decorate you — it transforms you. Saul encountered power on the road to Damascus and became Paul, a new man with a new mission.

This year, fear will not rule you, sin will not dominate you, and weakness will not define you. The Holy Spirit does not just change behavior — He changes desire.

Declare it boldly: “I am not the same!”

Call to Salvation

Now listen to me with your heart. If you are here today and you are not born again, this message is not about power first — it starts with Jesus. Power flows from relationship, and transformation flows from surrender.

Jesus died for your sins. Jesus rose for your justification. Jesus is calling you right now. You didn’t wander into this service; you were invited by grace.

If you say, “Pastor, I need Jesus. I want forgiveness. I want a new beginning,” lift your hand wherever you are.

(Pause. Let the Spirit move.)

Church, clap for every hand lifted — heaven is rewriting destinies!

Holy Spirit Invitation

Now church, stand to your feet. This year must not start empty; it must start empowered. You don’t need another sermon — you need an encounter.

Lift both hands and pray this aloud:

“Holy Spirit, I open my heart to You. Enter my life. Fill me afresh. Break old chains. Ignite new fire. This year, I receive power. In Jesus’ name!”

🔥 Somebody shout AMEN!

Prophetic Transition (Very Important)

Before I close, hear this word: power introduces newness, but fruit will prove it. Power enters instantly, and fruit grows intentionally. What the Spirit started today, He will mature this year.

Tell your neighbor with confidence: “This is just the beginning.”

THIS YEAR, POWER HAS ENTERED ME!
MY LIFE WILL SHOW IT!
IN JESUS’ NAME!
